Steel is set for the Argonne Residence!

There’s no time more exciting for a new modern home than when the steel starts to come out of the ground!  The Argonne Residence’s structural steel was erected in 5 working days in July.  The steel went up quickly which was helped by the concrete being all well within tolerance regarding elevation.

The steel at Argonne is actually 3 separate steel structures that will be connected by wood to form the house.  The house has two very large cantilevers, and one of them has floor-to-ceiling curtain wall glass.  The design is really starting to take shape and it is going to be an incredible house!

“Modern by Design” exhibit at High Museum of Art

Be sure to check out the “Modern by Design” exhibit at the High Museum of Art!  The exhibit lasts through August 21, 2011.

As part of the High’s ongoing collaboration with The Museum of Modern Art, Modern by Design presents groundbreaking designs of the past, present, and future. The exhibition features a selection of works chronicling three key moments in MoMA’s design collection and exhibition history—“Machine Art” (1934); “Good Design” (1950-1955); and “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape” (1972). Nearly 150 objects created by over 120 of the most influential artists and designers of the twentieth century are included.

Also on view are a group of late-twentieth- and early-twenty-first–century designs drawn from the High’s own growing permanent collection. Two new major commissioned installations by Dutch designer Joris Laarman and the Japanese design collective nendo are featured: Laarman’s “Digital Matter” and nendo’s “Visible Structures.” In total, eleven artists represent the diversity and international character of the field today.

Featured artists and designers include Ron Arad, FRONT Design, Johanna Grawunder, Zaha Hadid, Hella Jongerius, Patrick Jouin, Shiro Kuramata, Joris Laarman, nendo, Marc Newson, and
Ettore Sottsass Jr.

Not sure where to start with building a new modern home?

We hear this sentiment often.  The task of building a new custom modern home has many different components that all need to work together.

You need to find the right architect, the right builder, the right design, and make sure the design can work on your property.

See this real-life example of how Cablik Consulting can help you to get exactly what you want:

A potential client met with Cablik Enterprises and expressed interest in building a new modern home.  We entered into a small per-hour consulting agreement of approximately $2,000 to help them orchestrate the components for their new modern home, including the lot, the architecture, and the construction.  Part of this agreement included assistance to identify an appropriate intown lot which was suitable for their lifestyle and commuting patterns.  After the clients closed on the lot, we moved forward with the design component.

We solicited qualifications from our network of modern architects in the Atlanta area.  The client chose 3 to move forward, and gave these architects each $2,000 to create a modern home concept that would work on their lot.  The architects were given the lot’s address, a list of the clients’ general program and design style, and the client’s approximate construction budget.  The architects took a few weeks to create their concepts, and presented them to our client.   The competition aspect of this process really brought out some fantastic design concepts!  Ultimately the client picked the one which they liked the best.  Cablik Enterprises provided a detailed construction estimate for the winning design, which came in very close to the client’s budget.

This process allowed the client to ensure that they got the best design, on a lot that met their needs, and gave them the security that they can build their new modern home within their construction budget, all for a small up-front investment of $8,000.  The best part is that they know all the components will work together, without signing any large contracts.  This client has since gone on to proceed with construction of their new modern home with Cablik Enterprises as their builder.  We are pleased to present this option as a way to help simplify the process of designing and building a new modern home.

Cablik building the “Design is Material” exhibit for Modern Atlanta week

2011 Modern Atlanta Week is only one month away!  Having participated in the event for several years, we can tell you this is THE year’s best event for modern design and Atlanta modern home enthusiasts.  This year, Cablik Enterprises is participating more than ever.   In working with the event’s coordinator, we have volunteered to help with the week’s Launch Party, held on Tuesday, June 7th.  The Launch Party will feature an exhibit entitled Design Is MATERIAL, which will feature a collection of various building materials that are often used in modern home construction.  Cablik Enterprises will be assisting Modern Atlanta with the construction of the actual wall used in this exhibit.

Curated by Matteo Caimi, MA Director of Architecture & Design, Design Is MATERIAL makes its inaugural debut in Atlanta on launch night in the form of a micro-exhibition/installation. Caimi describes Design Is MATERIAL as “… a curator’s dream. I want this exhibition to inspire visitors and open minds to other possibilities. Selecting materials, systems, and finishings are extremely important considerations in architecture and design, and we think Design Is MATERIAL will aid in making that process easy, informative yet fun, and a be rich experience come launch night. Design Is Material has a bright future in the United States, and each year Atlanta will benefit from the excitement to come.”

At first in exhibition-form, and in time, Design Is MATERIAL will gradually grow in depth and in scale, introducing the future, innovation, and a whole new way of imaging projects and the built environment, created especially for the trade and materials industry. The public is encouraged to witness firsthand this one of a kind micro-exhibition.  From the world’s smallest mosiac tile made of porcelain, acoustic wall systems made from sustainable materials, to bathrooms and kitchens from international brands like Antoniolupi and Ernestomedo, Design Is MATERIAL showcases the world’s next plateau in material trends, sustainability, architectural and interior systems, and design innovation.
